Are Ballistic Helmets Bulletproof?

Ballistic helmets can be bulletproof but so much depends on what the materials are and how the helmet is made. Luckily there is the N.I.J. (National Institute Of Justice) ratings criteria that determines the protection level and potential use cases for a ballistic helmet.

The NIJ Safety Rating System

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) provides five ballistic protection levels for body armor, ranging from level IIA to level IV. The levels are determined based on the impacts they can absorb and the ammunition they are capable of stopping.

Level IIA

Level IIa is capable of stopping 9mm and .40 S&W ammunition fired from short barrel handguns. It also provides protection against threats such as knives and other stabbing weapons.

Level II

Level II provides the same protection as level IIA, but is also capable of stopping .357 Magnum ammunition fired from short barrel handguns.

Level IIIA

Level IIIA is capable of stopping most handgun rounds, including .44 Magnum ammunition fired from longer barrel handguns. It also provides protection against threats such as shotgun blasts and blunt force trauma.

Level III

Level III provides protection against rifle rounds, including 7.62x51mm NATO and .223 Remington. It is also capable of stopping most handgun rounds.

Level IV

Level IV provides the highest level of protection against armor-piercing rifle rounds, such as .30-06 M2AP.
